Willard F. Harley Jr.

Willard F. Harley Jr. has been teaching couples about marriage for a generation. What started as a Sunday school class morphed into lessons on tape shared with marriage counseling clients. Those transcripts of his classes made their way to Revell via sales rep Ernie Richer, who passed them to editor Fritz Ridenour, who agreed a book was possible.

“I would write sections of the book and send them to Fritz,” said Harley, now seventy-eight and still teaching on marriage. “He would read the sections, then send me a tape of his thoughts and ideas.

“Ridenour is the one who encouraged an ‘edge,’” said Harley. He wanted to make it fun to read, and the subtitle, Building an Affair-Proof Marriage, was that edge, according to Harley.

His Needs, Her Needs: Building an Affair-Proof Marriage came out in 1986 and languished for about a year. Harley called and wrote every place he knew to request media appearances before he got on The Sally Jessy Raphael Show.

“I was the only man in the entire place: the audience, camera people, everyone was female,” Harley recalled. “I was on with two women, one who had written a book saying that every woman should have an affair. The other was saying the same thing.

“I started out by saying that an affair is the worst thing a spouse can go through and likened it to having a heroin addiction,” said Harley. “Sally held up His Needs, Her Needs and said, ‘If I’d read this book fifteen years ago, my life would be very different.’”

The book took off. Revell quickly printed fifteen thousand copies that were soon gone. Another printing of twenty-five thousand sold out as well. Now more than five million copies have been sold in all editions, translations, and revised versions. Harley has written twenty-three books on marriage and relationships, hosts a daily radio talk show, and is director of Marriage Builders (www.marriagebuilders.com).

“Joyce and I are still working together, counseling together, and running the website. We have a great marriage, which I think is how I got into marriage counseling,” he said.
